Heavenly’s vibrant base village with nearby Tahoe Casinos and spectacular lake and desert views are a godsend.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) - 60 miles (1 hour 15 minutes)

Heavenly is the largest and highest ski resort in Lake Tahoe, offering incredible skiing and an even better après-ski scene. With four base areas, the main hub is Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe—a vibrant destination featuring a wide range of hotels, restaurants, pubs, casinos, and nightclubs. The Heavenly Gondola conveniently connects the village to the slopes, making it easy to transition from relaxation to adventure. On the mountain, skiers and snowboarders are treated to breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe. You can carve down wide-open groomed runs or glide through serene pine forests. However, as the most popular resort in the area, Heavenly can experience crowds, especially during peak times.
When it comes to accommodations, South Lake Tahoe (California) and Stateline (Nevada) are the two primary areas to stay. Heavenly Village is ideal for those wanting direct access to the gondola along with a lively mix of entertainment, dining and shopping. Alternatively, lakefront lodging offers stunning views of Lake Tahoe and is just a short shuttle ride away from the gondola and village attractions. Stateline is home to the area’s casinos and is only a short walk from both the Heavenly Gondola and the entertainment options in South Lake Tahoe. If you’re staying centrally in South Lake Tahoe or Stateline, everything you need—from dining to activities—is within easy walking distance. For access to the resort’s other base lodges, the Tahoe Transportation District provides convenient paid bus services operating from both Stateline and South Lake Tahoe. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or enjoying the après-ski vibe, Heavenly offers a perfect balance of adventure and leisure.
Visit Palisades Tahoe for legendary steeps, high snowfall and vibrant Olympic heritage, with activities for all ski levels.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) - 50 miles (1 hour)

Palisades Tahoe, the largest ski resort in California, unites the iconic Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows ski areas. This sprawling destination offers something for everyone but is particularly renowned for its advanced and expert terrain. Skiers and snowboarders can tackle expansive open bowls, challenging moguls, cliff drops, and gullies, among other thrilling features. The Olympic Valley base village buzzes with energy, offering a lively après-ski scene, a variety of restaurants, and ample lodging options. However, its popularity often draws crowds. For a quieter experience, head to Alpine Meadows, a hidden gem with less traffic and more serene slopes.
Lodging is available exclusively at the base of Olympic Valley, putting you close to both the slopes and the village's dining and shopping options. Alternatively, consider staying in Truckee, a charming town just 15 minutes away by car. It's a more budget-friendly choice and serves as an excellent base if you plan to explore other nearby resorts. Within Olympic Valley, everything you need is conveniently walkable. During the winter season, the Palisades Tahoe Shuttle provides regular service between the base areas of Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additionally, the TART Regional Transit offers free transportation between Olympic Valley, Truckee and Tahoe City, making it easy to navigate the region.
Kirkwood accounts for a local-vibe mountain with Lake Tahoe's deepest snow and most adventurous terrain.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) - 72 miles (1 hour 30 minutes)

Kirkwood is renowned for its serene, untouched landscapes and is a haven for seasoned skiers and snowboarders. The resort spans five peaks with two primary base areas: Mountain Village and Timber Creek. With more than half of the runs classified as advanced or expert, including legendary black diamond trails, it’s a paradise for thrill-seekers.
However, Kirkwood is not the place for those seeking vibrant après-ski scenes or urban conveniences. Dining, shopping, and entertainment options are limited, and the resort is far from major towns. But if your priority is carving through pristine slopes without the crowds, Kirkwood delivers an exceptional experience. For accommodations, the base area offers several lodging options close to the slopes. Most dining choices are concentrated in Mountain Village, while staying near Timber Creek provides better access to beginner-friendly slopes and the ski school. A complimentary shuttle system connects the base areas and parking lots, running every 5–12 minutes for added convenience. While the shuttle makes getting around the resort easy, having a car is recommended for trips to nearby towns.
Northstar California is an upscale family-friendly ski resort with exceptional intermediate terrain and a vibrant base village.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) - 42 miles (45 minutes)

Northstar is a top choice for families, offering an upscale ski experience with plenty of charm. Its base village is arguably the best among Tahoe resorts, exuding a European ambiance with its cobblestone streets, boutique shops, inviting dining options and luxurious spas. Families will find no shortage of activities to keep the little ones entertained, including ice skating, tubing, a cinema and a dedicated children’s ski school. However, it’s worth noting that Northstar is one of the more expensive resorts in the region. The slopes at Northstar are particularly well-suited to intermediate skiers, though the resort also boasts award-winning terrain parks designed to accommodate all skill levels.
At the heart of the resort lies Northstar Village, located at the mountain's base. Staying in the village places you within walking distance of the slopes, restaurants, shops, and family-friendly activities. For those wanting extra convenience, mid-mountain lodging provides ski-in ski-out access. Alternatively, staying in nearby Truckee—just a 15-minute drive away—can be a smart option if you’re planning to explore other ski areas. A gondola connects the pedestrian-friendly Northstar Village to the mid-mountain area, making navigation hassle-free. Additionally, the TART Regional Transit offers free services between Northstar, Truckee and Kings Beach. If you’re driving, keep in mind that parking spots fill up quickly, so plan accordingly.
Sugar Bowl Resort is the most accessible ski resort from the Bay Area and Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO), with a balance of terrain types and fewer crowds.
Reno-Tahoe Intl. Airport - 47 miles (50 minute drive)

Sugar Bowl is one of the most convenient ski resorts for visitors from the San Francisco Bay Area and is also accessible from Reno Airport. While it’s a relatively small resort, it offers diverse terrain spread across four mountain peaks and two primary base areas. The Village and Judah base areas maintain a classic ski ambiance, with a handful of dining options rather than an abundance of shops or nightlife. For Nordic skiing enthusiasts, Sugar Bowl connects to the renowned Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Area. Although the resort can attract crowds, they are typically smaller compared to nearby resorts.
Lodging close to the slopes includes The Hotel at Sugar Bowl, located in the Village base area, along with several vacation rentals. Alternatively, you can stay in the nearby town of Truckee, just a 20-minute drive away, which offers a broader selection of dining and shopping options. A pedestrian-friendly Village Walkway connects the two base areas in a short 5–10 minute stroll. For convenience, the Judah base area provides slope-side parking, while the Village base area is snowbound and accessible only via a gondola from the Village parking lot.
Sierra-at-Tahoe is a local gem celebrated for its exceptional tree skiing and welcoming atmosphere.
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) - 75 miles (1 hour 30 minutes)

Sierra-at-Tahoe is a beloved gem among locals, known for its exceptional grooming, inbounds tree skiing, and thrilling side-country terrain that keeps skiers returning year after year. In the summer of 2021, a devastating wildfire swept through the resort. The tree skiing has faded into a shadow of its former glory, yet the stumps remain, exuding a haunting, unique charm. The mountain is especially welcoming to beginners and intermediates, making it an ideal choice for families. For younger adventurers, Blizzard Mountain offers kid-friendly tubing, sledding and a snow play area to keep the little ones entertained.
The resort’s base areas feature a variety of dining options, while the outdoor plaza is the perfect après-ski hangout. Cozy up by the fire pits to relax and recharge after a day on the slopes. While there’s no on-site lodging at Sierra, South Lake Tahoe is just a 30-minute drive away and offers a wide array of dining, shopping and entertainment options. Having a car is convenient for getting around, but private bus services also connect the San Francisco Bay Area to the resort.
